Our Authentication Process
At Gems Forgotten, we specialise in pre-loved luxury timepieces — watches with history, character, and often decades of stories behind them. Many of the pieces we sell are 30–40 years old and rarely arrive with their original box or papers. That's the nature of vintage. What we can guarantee is that every watch we sell has been personally inspected and verified against its maker's original markings — and we'll tell you exactly how.
What We Verify
For every watch that reaches our listings, we independently verify:
- The movement — confirmed as a genuine Swiss calibre (or, in a small number of cases, Japanese), cross-referenced against the original manufacturer's technical datasheet (whenever possible)
- The bracelet and clasp hardware — examined for the correct maker's stamps, hallmarks and reference marks
- The crown — checked for the brand's signature marking (for example, the Gucci logo engraved on the crown of most Gucci models)
- Bezels (including plastic interchangeable bezels on Gucci 1100L "Change Bezel" models) — checked for the correct Gucci stamp and period-correct finish
- Overall consistency — dial, hands, case and components checked against known examples of the reference
Each of these carries independent evidence of authenticity. A genuine watch should be consistent across all of them — a mismatch on any single element is a flag we investigate before listing.
How We Verify It
Before any watch is listed on our website, it goes through a full inspection:
- Case opened and movement exposed for direct inspection
- Calibre markings checked against the original manufacturer's datasheet — bridge shape, jewel count, engraving placement and font
- Movement serial and reference numbers recorded and photographed for our records
- Bracelet and clasp stamps examined under magnification against known maker's marks
- Crown inspected for the correct brand signature
- Bezel checked — for 1100L Change Bezel models, each interchangeable plastic bezel is individually verified for the Gucci stamp
- Final visual inspection of dial, hands, case and overall proportions against known reference examples
We are transparent: we do not use third-party authentication services. Instead, we rely on direct comparison against official manufacturer datasheets and documented reference marks — the same references used by professional watchmakers — combined with years of hands-on experience with these specific models.
What This Covers — And What It Doesn't
Because these watches are decades old, it's common and entirely legitimate for them to have had servicing over the years. A case, dial, crown, bracelet link or even movement component may have been replaced by a watchmaker at some point in the watch's life. This does not make the watch "fake" — it makes it serviced.
Where we identify any known service history, replacement parts, or cosmetic wear, we disclose it clearly in the product description and photographs. Our guarantee covers the genuineness of the watch as described; any visible condition points, period-correct replacements, or signs of wear are described honestly on each individual listing.
If you ever have questions about a specific watch's condition before buying, email us — we'd rather have the conversation upfront than after it reaches you.
Our Authenticity Guarantee
We stand behind every watch we sell.
If a qualified, independent watchmaker provides a written report confirming that the watch you received is not a genuine example of the brand and model described in the listing — whether through the movement, hardware markings, or branded components — we will refund your purchase in full and cover your return shipping costs. The returned watch must match the serial numbers and condition documented at dispatch.
This guarantee is valid for 30 days from delivery. If a dispute arises, we're happy to have the watch independently reviewed at our expense — we want the truth as much as you do.
Why We Do It This Way
We're a small UK business, not a marketplace. Every watch that leaves us has been personally inspected, photographed and documented. We'd rather make a narrower promise we can keep than a broader one we can't. Verifying the movement against its manufacturer's datasheet, and the hardware against its original markings, is something we can prove, document, and stand behind — and that's what we offer you.
If you have any questions about our process, or about a specific watch, we'd love to hear from you.
